ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a disorder that is prevalent in children, but can also effect adults. ADHD can be caused by a number of varying factors including genetics, mineral or vitamin deficiencies in the body, such as a deficiency of the B6 vitamin, a deficiency in fatty acids or by a deficiency in magnesium.

Children that are diagnosed with ADHD are usually prescribed medications to treat the symptoms. The common type of medication that is prescribed is stimulants. Stimulant medications are capable of controlling chemical changes or imbalances in the brain. Stimulants aid an ADHD child with staying focused for a particular time span as well as by reducing hyperactivity, which most ADHD children are prone to. However, a majority of parents are against the adverse side effects of stimulants and are hesitant to give their ADHD child stimulants for long periods of time due to the addictiveness of the stimulant drugs.

There are other methods of treating ADHD. Natural remedies, therapies, and diet are just some of the other methods used for the treatment of ADHD symptoms. The beneficial effects of natural remedies may not be comparable with the beneficial effects of the stimulant medications, but these natural remedies are safe to utilize and should not cause harm to the ADHD child.

ADHD is an incurable disorder and therefore the main goal of treatment is to reduce or eliminate the symptoms of ADHD. The very first step to minimize symptoms of ADHD is usually by administration of medications, particularly stimulants. The stimulants are either short-acting or long-acting and only provide a temporary effect to subside or reduce the symptoms. The most commonly prescribed stimulants are Ritalin, Dexedrine, Concerta mg and Adderall. These medications are proven to reduce the hyperactivity level of the ADHD child and improve their ability to focus and pay attention to the task at hand. Non-stimulant medications are also available, such as Strattera, which have similar effects as the stimulant medications without the harmful side effects or potential for addiction.

When the desired behavior or an improvement in behavior of an ADHD child is not achieved through treatment or medication, then an antidepressant medication is prescribed. It is usually only given when an ADHD child demonstrates depressive symptoms. However, these medications can be effective in controlling the chemical imbalances of the brain. This may allow the child to demonstrate reduced symptoms of ADHD and develop improved relationships with other individuals.

Another Attention Deficit treatment method includes therapy, particularly behavioral therapy. Behavioral therapy is intended for ADHD children who are taking medications for their ADHD symptoms. Behavioral therapy can help the child to learn to manage their behavior accordingly. Behavioral therapy is also intended for parents and teachers so that they are informed on how to manage a child suffering from ADHD.

Proper nutrition is also important in improving the behavior of children with ADHD. Children suffering from ADHD who eat more nutritious foods can benefit from these foods, which can improve their overall performance. Eliminating foods that can activate the symptoms of ADHD is also beneficial in improving behavior and performance.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder treatments also include the use of natural remedies, in particular, herbal remedies. These remedies may provide the same beneficial effects as the stimulant medications, with the advantage of fewer or no side effects.
